An artist that intrigues me.
Whenever I walked passed the Yamamoto store in Antwerp I slowed down.
The clothes looked like slowly moving installations. The material was divine every time you dared to touch something.
It was beautiful in a harsh way. The store is gone now..too bad.
I didn't buy anything because it was very expensive, but now the option is gone, that's even worse.

Another short movie I would love to see.

The little shacks on the ECLAIR logo are a typical thing for the Belgian coast.
In the early 20ties people already used the little wooden shacks on the Belgian beaches to stock their chairs and toys for the kids.
And they still are being used at some of the Belgian beaches like in Heist, one of my favorite places.

"On September 28th, 2011, the "Red Tide" hit San Diego shores. The neon-blue waves are not digitally created or altered from their original form.
This video was shot at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Calif & North Ponto Beach in Carlsbad, Calif."

I was able to see this phenomenon with my own eyes during my sweet surf holiday in San Clemente California.
It is remarkable! It is magical!

Out of three different cloths I created one woman.  She was cut up and stitched back together, her face different but unchanging.  Sewed on a background of flaming red garments for 'special occasions' that never occurred. 
This was my finishing work for last year in Textile Arts at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. This work - "losing time steals your independence"- is one out of my collection of "Waiting Women".
More 'waiting women' will find a way out!

I'm really looking forward to start an new year from September.

Last spring, ‘The Weavers Co-ordination’ set up a competition for an exhibition-tour in Italy and Belgium around the following theme: "La borsa accessorio necessario" or "The bag accessory / necessary”. The initiative was a joint venture with the Foundation for the Arts and Crafts in Florence’, the ‘Florence City Council’, the ‘Royal Academy of Fine Arts’ in Antwerp and the ‘Friends of the School Leumann’

My creation was selected as one of the finalists and will be displayed on an expo-tour in Firenze and later this year in my hometown Antwerp, Belgium.

For this project, I developed a purse based on the principle of an envelope.
The design was inspired on the art of origami folding; e.g. the barn swallow model.
The materials I selected and processed were:
- a page from a Japanese newspaper which I manipulated to make it tougher and more flexible but also to give it varnished finish.
- a blue cotton cloth that was finished on the outside with silk screen prints and manual painting.
- a simple gold-colored embroidery on the inside.

I used a brown cardboard box and stuffed it with origami folded birds as a filling, to protect the purse during transport.

What a year! I mean an academic year.
I will be posting some pictures of my work from over the past few months.

These were experiments on natural fabrics but with synthetic dyes.
I tried a lot of silks, linen, batiste, organza, etamine, wool, ...
Very bright and very present...later on, I would learn that natural dyes are so much better on the eye and heart.

Soul of textile

Hooray, from 18 till 26th of June you can look at all our work we did this year at the Royal Academy of Arts Antwerp for the department of Free Textile Arts.

I took it upon myself to design the poster for this event using a textile bird made by Barbara (a college at the academy).

I'll be posting some extra work soon since I'm very proud to announce that one of my assignments during the year was nominated to be published in a catalog.

A most endearing creature showed itself today.

First I didn’t even have a clue what it was?
And to be honest I still don’t, but that makes it even more lovable.
First it was shy and a bit in an unresponsive way. It tried to hide in the greens as if a camouflage could cover its marvelous appearance. Nevertheless it didn’t take long before we both felt it was okay to show ourselves and soon it appeared in all its glory.

It was unique and sweet with a bit of a bold saucy character, we quickly became the best of friends. Even Lord Eatalot was OK with it although the close sniffies made NouNou (that’s what I named the little creature) a bit grumpy.

How strange little things on silly Mondays can make your life just a little richer.

Bangkok is irresistible to me due to the constant, boiling heat of creative minds, working their way to the surface like a cab crawling through rush-hour in Banglamphu. There is so much more than meets the eye. I saw paintings, sculptures, fashion ideas that blew my mind. It’s like a non stop inspirational input to me.

One of those things is a little coffee house on Rambutri Soi: MOKA MODAKA...common you think?
Close to the ve-ry predictable Kao San Road, where everythings changes but always stays the same, 3 girls started an elegant, cosy coffee shop.
It serves the BEST coffee you can get in Bangkok (Italian, French standards) and you get your coffee in a shop surrounded by art from artists like Peenida and Kannikar.

It’s refreshing to see a well conceived idea with guts and style! These girls gave me ideas and energy to start thinking different.

Girls take over!

Salvador Agrón a.k.a. “The Capeman” was Puerto Rican 'Vampires' gang member who murdered two teenagers in a Hell's Kitchen park in a notorious 1959 gang fight.

The story of 'The Capeman' and his accomplice 'The Umbrella man' is one of a lost childhood, chaos, integration problems, miscommunication, and the irrefutable pitfalls of modern society.

Paul Simon released an album in 1997 "Songs from The Capeman".
It contains songs written for a Broadway musical "The Capeman" based on the life of Salvador.

The album is a blend of doo-wop, gospel, and Latin music.
Although it received Tony award nominations it didn't receive very good reviews and the musical just ran for 3 months.
Too bad! This album of Paul Simon is a gem!

Drawings I made after viewing the amazing documentary “Japan: A story of Love and Hate” by Sean McAllister. 
Fueled by my childhood fascination for all things Japanese, I keep on discovering the most contradictory and beautiful aspects of Japan. Nevertheless, I hardly ever discoverd intimate and truly frank insights on dreams, fears, anger, frustration, insecurities or outspoken personal beliefs of their inhabitants.

Sean McAllisters’ documentary touched me as no other.  Life for Naoki and Yoshi is tough and unfair but to my opinion Naoki‘s philosophy of life is courageous. Painfully honest and incredibly moving.

The book “eat, pray, love” stands in my bookcase like a frolic colorful orphan. I received it as a gift, started reading it with a great deal of suspicion but I was swallowed by it very quickly and enjoyed it so much I’m still quite surprised.

Yes it’s a bestseller, yes it’s an American ‘female’ writer talking about a spiritual travel and ‘no’ to your big surprise, I bet you won’t dry-heave from clichés reading this excellent book.

Elizabeth Gilbert (the writer) talks on TED about the creative process and the anxiety it entails. The speech will need your attention more than the average youtube squirt but I highly recommend it to anyone who wonders why she/he can’t control creativity and is mortally afraid to suck big time at what you do!

Beautiful Africa

Through an interesting speech of filmmaker Franco Sacchi on TED, I learned about Nollywood.

It is a highly productive industry in Nigeria that makes an amazing amount of films every year.
Discussion grows that quantity should be swopped for quality. But I can’t help being charmed by these grassroots filmmakers.
Maybe it isn’t a “City of God” movie yet, but I do believe this will grow an inspiring generation of Nigerian script writers and filmmakers.

I absolutely love Tara Donovan’s art.

It’s clever, amazingly surprising on the eye, refreshing, innovative and feminine in the best way intended.

I hope to see her installations next year in (hopefully) a city trip to NYC.

Her work is a true inspiration for my painting.

This docu movie is a pretty good example of how a naked, honest ideal can be strangled by good intentions and the devouring violent urge of the audience to oversimplify. Creating an elite that can only prophesize its own destruction.

Even if you don’t like hardcore, or never played in any kind of band.
This is a pretty good movie about losing the moment, a movie about disappointment.
